LarimarThe beautiful "Gemstone of the Caribbean". a blue colored bariant of the mineral pectolite, is found only in one remote mine on the Island of Hispaniola. It was discovered by a peace Corp. Volunteer in 1975. The name originated by Miguel Mendez, the first commercial supplier, who named the gem after his daughter "Lari" and "Mar" the Spanish word for the sea.
The stones color ranges from a deep sky blue to the azure bluish green of the Caribbean. Its characteristic colors and variations of texture make it a very unique and interesting gemstone. Unfortunately, the government stopped all mining of Larimar, due to the disturbance that it was causing the habitats around it. Some say that this stone will be worth more than diamonds someday.
